Covert (invisible to the naked eye) technology
is used for the verification of the authenticity
of a document
There are four important factors to consider when
choosing a technology to protect against counterfeiting:
1.
Ease of understanding by both the customer
and the examiner
2.
Ease of verifying
authenticity
3.
Difficulty
of imitation
4.
Level of protection
required
Because the means of authentication is hidden,
covert technology is very difficult to imitate.
Furthermore, it is another level of security that
can be combined with other methods of protection
to increase the complexity (and thus the security)
of printed material. For example, a printed document
that requires a high level of protection may use
a combination of overt and covert technologies
– for example; OD ink (overt) and Starbrite ink
(covert, invisible). The only disadvantage of
covert technology is that it requires specialist
equipment for verification.
